From apps that allow you to send free text messages anywhere in the world, to apps that help you take breathtaking pictures and make cheap phone calls, the Apple iOS app store is a treasure trove of utilities, games and entertainment. Currently boasting over 700,000 apps (with over 130 new apps added each day), the iOS app store is the largest app for mobile devices in the world, closely followed by the Google Play store for Android phones.
Recently, Apple released its ‘best apps of the year’ list. Taking inspiration from that, here is our very own ‘best of’ list:
1. Bad Piggies
Just when you thought the Rovio ‘Angry Birds’ formula was getting tired, the company comes out with a refreshingly fun game. ‘Bad Piggies’ puts you in the player’s seat as one of the piggies trying to get at the angry birds’ eggs. You’ll have to create planes and flying machines from obscure odds and ends, all in an attempt to reach a map of the birds’ eggs. The physics engine is as good as ever, and the quirky graphics, fun gameplay and endless sandbox opportunities make it one of the best purchases on the iOS app store.
2. Action Movie FX
How would you like to add Michael Bay-like special effects to your home movies? The Acton Movie FX, one of the bestselling video apps ever, lets you do exactly that. With an extensive range of special effects, you can bring your home movies to life and turn them into a Hollywood production.
3. Paper
Apple’s “Editor’s Choice” award winner; Paper is one of the best note-taking apps on the iOS. Jot down notes, sketch ideas, and share them seamlessly across your network with this breathtakingly beautiful productivity app. The clean design and excellent reproduction of pen, charcoal, pencil or paintbrush on paper makes it one of the must-haves apps of the year.
4. Instagram
Instagram is a bona fide worldwide phenomenon, boasting over 100M active users (and a $1Bn purchase price from Facebook). The picture taking app topped Apple’s ‘Best of’ list this year. Adding retro image effects to a picture and sharing it with your network has never been easier, thanks to Instagram. With Facebook integration, the app is now better than ever.
5. CSR Racing
CSR Racing has been one of the best performing apps on the iOS store. This racing game puts you behind the steering wheel of gorgeously rendered real world cars as you race them across the finish line in drag races. The graphics are downright beautiful and the gameplay is challenging without getting frustrating, making it one of the must have downloads in the app store.
